Roça Uba Budo Velho

Echoes of Grandeur in São Tomé’s Forgotten Heartland.

Hidden within the lush eastern district of Cantagalo, far from the island’s well-trodden coastal roads, lies Roça Uba Budo — a once-magnificent cocoa plantation that whispers of a forgotten empire and the golden age of São Tomé’s agricultural might.

Founded in 1875, Uba Budo would later become part of the vast holdings of the Companhia Agrícola Ultramarina, one of the most powerful agricultural enterprises in the archipelago during the early 20th century. But unlike many roças strung along the southern coastal road, Uba Budo Velho (the inland heart of the estate) is not easily stumbled upon. To reach it, one must leave the main road behind and venture down a series of unpaved tracks that wind deep into the island’s green interior. What awaits is nothing short of astonishing.

Even in ruins, the old terreiro—the plantation's central yard—commands awe. It’s a masterclass in spatial hierarchy, once carefully designed to reflect the roça’s structure and social order. At its heart stands the former administrative house, an imposing relic of Portuguese colonial architecture: lofty ceilings, sweeping verandas, and tall shuttered windows meant to tame the tropical heat. Though time has weathered its walls, its dignity remains intact.

Archival photographs reveal a thriving, interconnected world: drying trays bathed in sunlight, sanzalas (workers’ quarters) arranged in rhythmic precision, and, perhaps most impressively, a private railway line. Steam locomotives once threaded their way between the main estate and its satellite dependencies, hauling cocoa beans through the rainforest toward waiting ships.

Today, vines drape over crumbling facades and silence has settled where industry once ruled—but Roça Uba Budo still radiates an almost cinematic allure. It’s a place where nature reclaims history slowly, gently, and beautifully—inviting the curious traveler to step through time and imagine the pulse of an era long gone.

Did you Know that

In the 90s, Roça Uba Budo was the setting chosen by RTP Internacional, the Portugal's public television channel, to run a television series that portrayed a love story between a slave and her master, "Milongo".

By 1905, as happened with most of portuguese plantations in São Tomé, the roça had become the property of an entity based in Lisbon. It was managed locally by an administrator named Avelino Arlindo da Patena.
