Ribeira Izé, an abandoned plantation established in the early 19th century by iron-willed Maria Correia, a Príncipe-born woman determined to defy gender conventions by ruling her own domain.
The name Ribeira Izé derives from a watercourse with the same name located on the island of Príncipe that runs north until it meets the sea at Praia da Ribeira Izé, between Ponta da Furna and Ponta Marmita.
Ribeira Izé was the first capital of Príncipe. You can still see the ruins of its church and the house of a famous historical figure of São Tomé and Príncipe, Maria Correia.
